A NARROW FELLOW: The Art of Poetry

Our reading period ended February 15, 2016.

Publication of A NARROW FELLOW is suspended Indefinitely, while our publisher and editor pursues his MFA at Queens University of Charlotte.

Traditionally, poets have often used art for inspiration; from sections of Homer's Iliad, to Billy Collins' Fishing on the Susquehanna in July. The editors of A NARROW FELLOW Journal of Poetry turn the ekphrasis method upside down around and on its ear, commissioning artists from around the country and abroad to create a series of visual artistic pieces based on the contemporary poetry published by A NARROW FELLOW.

For our Spring 2016 issue, the featured artist is Henry Avignon.

We ask that you submit a set of three poems. Each poem one page in length. If selected, we'll print the entire set of three poems, and Mr. Avignon will create a visual work of art for each set. Those selected by our editors will have a strong theme that ties all three poems together.

What sort of poems do we publish? What do we like? Well, we like complexities. Something fresh. We like jigsaw puzzles with a few pieces missing. Our poems use raw sugar instead of processed white. You will not find many rhymes on our pages. We very rarely publish poems about your observations of nature, unless you're writing about something very unique or have a unique voice. Don't tell the same story about nature that's been told a zillion times before. And cats. We love cats but we hate cat poems.

We publish poems that tell stories, like those written by Jim Harms and Karen Schubert. Jim Tolan, Carol Hamilton, and Jeffrey Skinner.

Read Gregory Orr's Temperaments of Poetry to get an idea of what makes a great poem. Purchase one of our previous issues.

We always look for fresh voices as well as outstanding work from established poets.

When submitting, we ask that you review our guidelines, making sure to set your page sizes to 6x9 and margins to 1.25 inch right and left. Choose poems that fit within those constraints.
